Lent begins on the 17th of Feb...

The very word, LENT, comes from the Anglo-Saxon "lencten," which basically means "Spring."

Why Spring? Well, in part, because Spring is about death and life. Look at the trees and flowers......that have died, and are now coming back to life. That's what Easter is about.

The Death of Good Friday and the LIFE of Easter Sunday.....that's what we call the Paschal Mystery, the fact that in order to RISE....we must first DIE..... Read more

So, what are you giving up for Lent? And don't say porn...You should be giving that up anyway.

    I'm giving up television! Hurray.
  • DarzM
I'm giving up sweets, alcohol and listening to U2! The latter is going to be the toughest by far!
  • Fr. Barnabas
Gving up listening to U2 - how could you possibly do that!
  • Fernie  - Lent
I'm giving up Facebook and beer. There'll probably be something else, but that's it so far.
  • Mike Caven  - What I plan to give up for Lent and beyond!
I plan on giving up more of the “Lies” I have believed most of my life!

There are three “Lies” that guys who
struggle with their sex drive believe (which I am one.)

Now what “lies” do men who struggle with their sex drive
believe? According to the acclaimed author Patrick Carnes in his best selling book on sexual addiction, "Out of the
Shadows." There three main "lies" that men who are addicted to sex believe:

    One)
    I’m basically a bad
    and unworthy person.
(This is a lie because - Our Father God views us as His adopted sons)

    Two)
No one loves me as I
    am.
(This is a lie because - Our Father God sent Jesus to die on the cross for us, just as we are.)

    Three)
    My needs are
never going to be met if I have to depend on others.
(This is a lie because - Our Father God created us and knows all
our needs and He desires to meet all those needs.)
I know if I truly embrace the above truths, that the intensity of my
sex drive will greatly subside and with that it will be easier to enter into His presence.

    Blessings and Success Mike

we must undeceive ourselves.”

  • Joe McClane  - Lent
I'm giving up complaining & frustration. Mother Mary... help me offer it up every time!
  • me
    Lady Gaga, facebook, shopping.
  • AndrewR
I'm doing a combination of giving and giving up.

I'm going to spend some extra time reading every day. St. Augustine's
"Confessions," will be the first one. That will actually be harder I think than what I'm giving up. I'm also
making it a concrete resolution that I will pray the hours at least three times a day *every day,* no excuses.

    I'm not
strong enough yet to give up television completely, so I'm starting off lighter: I'm going for no more than six hours of
TV a week, with no more than 2 hours per day.

I'm thinking of giving up all snacks, something I do too much of!
  • Starla  - Lent
I tend to think of Lent not so much as "giving up" something, but rather how can I better improve my life to
    better serve God.
This year for me is going to be sticking to my goals that I set for myself.

    I'm the type
of person that likes to procrastinate and not follow through with projects, etc. So, one goal is to stick to the gym and
become healthier. Another is to diversify my income with my home buisness...to get serious about it. The other is a big
one for me; that is, to live to be civil to my sister-in-law.

I pray for everyone's perseverance through this
Holy time....only the Lord knows how much we need it! God Bless everyone!
  • PwillCo  - Still deciding
RE: Father B. - "Gving up listening to U2 - how could you possibly do that!"

Maybe by giving up listening to
U2......he'll finally find what he's looking for!

    Ha-ha, I kill me!...oh, so funny....
(that's a joke on one of their
    lyrics from the '80's, btw)

I haven't yet decided eggs-actly, what my Lent sacrifice(s) shall be, but I need to decide!
I have in my life so many distractions in modern western culture to choose from that it's hard to deside what's the
biggest. I know I want to increase prayer time....eucharistic adoration is something I do NOT do enough of, that is a
good idea.....but i should definitely give up something i like a lot......maybe coffee, which I go through 3-5 cups a
day.....even harder would be giving up caffeine....yeesh, i can't imagine..

....this reminds of my priest back home in
North Carolina....Fr. Ken. He drinks a lot of coffee, like all day, so one Lent a few years ago he declared that he
would only drink ONE cup of coffee a day during Lent...the catch? He had this HUGE coffee mug that could hold an entire
pot of coffee and he would just reheat it through out the day. But he kept to his promise of one cup of coffee a day!

.....I could even maybe give up some form of music, or ipod listening, but I am doing that anyway, listening to
    less....
or I could instead vow to be more prudent with my time & money in general, but that may need more
    specifics....

....anyway, I'll repost when I have a "final answer" of my Lenten sacrifices. I haven't checked
the catechism on this yet e...

At my house we will pray a family rosary on Sat. and Sun. through Lent and continue permanently. And I will give a
little of my time and sweat by clearing a parcel of land.
  • David  - My Credit Card
I'm giving up using my credit card for lent. I depend upon this little plastic card. I gave it to my wife. God help
me. I'm working on doing little things to love my wife. I just started wearing the wedding band after being married
for 4 years. I'm doing the Fast and Abstinance stuff the Church recommends for lent.
  • malusi  - lent
I planning on giving up hot water. for leisure uses (showers, hand washing, those kind of things)
  • rbtobeck  - lent
im gonna go to daily mass monday-thurdays. with sometime during the week go to the chapel for a holy hour
  • Anonymouse
I'm thinking of either adding to my prayer time, or giving up coffee and sugar. Maybe both. :)

    I like your post, Mike.
I can identify with those lies, even as a woman.

Giving up listening to rock n roll, all of it, and only listen to EWTN radio channel 160 on Sirius radio.
  • kjunlandr  - Lent a time of further transformation in Christ
Lent is a time of sincere reflection on what I need to do to be fully transformed in Christ. Upon reflection and using
scripture and the clear teachings of the CCC, it will aid me to look at those areas of my behavior through catholic
lenses to see where I have fallen short and to see where I have made progress.
I have already given up listening to
rock n roll, I can not eat sweets due to being recently diagnosed with diabetes, I am sober form booze since 3/24/2006
and lust since 2/13/2007. I will refrain from watching TV, which I do very little of as it is.
  • TradCath51  - Lent
Fasting for 40 days, and practicing random acts of humility.
  • Evelyne
I am giving up wine, doing more spiritual readings, and 1 day a week of No Facebook and no talking with my boyfrined

Line Dancing, Friday, 23 July 2010
When it comes to purity and chastity, as Christians, it seems as though we’re always looking for the line between sin and virtue, always looking to define exactly what that line is, and what makes us cross it. And unfortunately, it’s often not because we want to stay away from the other side, it’s usually because we want to get as close to... Read more...
The update on June, Tuesday, 20 July 2010
When I interviewed June (not her real name) a couple of months ago to learn what it was like for her as a stripper I wasn't aware of the impact that her story and your responses would have on so many people... including June. By the grace of God we were able to find the money to fundraise the money to pay off June's credit card debt and she quit... Read more...

The Bitter Pill, Saturday, 17 July 2010
“Protect against pregnancy”        “Go in through the narrow gate. The gate to destruction is wide, and the road that leads there is easy to follow. A lot of people go through that gate. But the gate to life is very narrow. The road that leads there is so hard to follow that only a few people find it.” Matt 7:13-14  I don’t think... Read more...
Defeats the Purpose, Tuesday, 13 July 2010
Have you ever been in a situation where you were contemplating the practicality of something and the notion was eventually defeated by the realization that the particular something in question would become absurd in its use? You may have even heard yourself say, "It would defeat the purpose". That's a pretty common expression. This is often the... Read more...
